My daughter was waiting for me, expecting me to take her to the hospital as I had her whole life. We were on face time and she said, "daddy, are you coming?" the mother then said, "no he's not coming" and hung up... I immediately called back seeing as I'm on the road driving to pick her up and,

this was the conflicted war-torn face staring back at me.

That expression stayed lodged in me the confusion, panic, and the first seconds of realizing something promised was no longer happening.
